Faridkot, January 6: The arrest of a reader of Superintendent of Police (Detective) here on Friday by a Vigilance flying squad while accepting Rs 50,000 as bribe from an accused in a cheating and fraud case has landed the SP in difficult situation.
At the time when members of the Vigilance flying squad from Mohali raided the office of SP (D) this afternoon, many police officers and officials fled in panic, leaving their offices here.
Assistant Inspector General (Vigilance) Ashish Kapoor said Gurwinder Singh, reader of SP (D), Faridkot, Sewa Singh Malhi has been arrested. He was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from Pardeep Sachdeva to give clean chit to him and two others in a cheating and fraud case.
A criminal case was registered against Pardeep, his wife Neelam and Vikram Taneja under Section 420/34 of the IPC at Faridkot on November 14, 2017. In the case, Maninder Singh of Faridkot had accused Pardeep, his wife and Vikram of duping him of Rs 15 lakh with a promise of selling him a cold store.
After registration of the case, Pardeep Sachdeva demanded reinvestigation in the case and the SP (D) was entrusted the inquiry. It is alleged that to cancel the FIR, Gurwinder Singh, the SP’s reader, had a dealing of Rs 1.25 lakh with the accused and Rs 50,000 was being paid today when the Vigilance caught the reader.
The AIG (Vigilance), Ashish Kapoor, said after interrogation of the accused reader, the Vigilance would also question the SP (D). Further action in the case would be taken after the questioning of the accused and suspect, said the AIG.
Malhi could not be contacted for comment as his mobile phone was found switched off.
