New Delhi, July 3: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered all states and Union Territories not to appoint any police officer convenient to them as Director General of Police (DGP).

The court stopped the practice of state governments appointing politically convenient officers as DGPs and directed all states and UTs to send proposal of names for DGPs to UPSC three months before the post is due to fall vacant.

The UPSC will shortlist names of state DGPs and prepare a panel of three names.

The state will have to choose one of the three names in the panel. The Centre told the top court that states were appointing their favourite police officers as DGPs.

“There will not be any appointments of acting DGPs. Once appointed a DGP will get a two-year tenure irrespective of superannuation,” said the SC.
