Chandigarh, May 6: With thunderstorm and squall likely at isolated places in Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi, Haryana Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma on Sunday announced a two-day holiday in government and private schools starting on Monday.

The All-India Warning Bulletin issued by the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the IMD has predicted thunderstorm, squall and hail for parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on Tuesday.

The Revenue and Disaster Management Department has issued an advisory in view of the possibility of heavy rain, thunderstorms or dust storms on Monday and Tuesday.
A spokesman for the department said there was no need to panic. “People should pay attention to children and senior citizens. All departments have been directed to stay alert,” he added.

The advisory said people should prepare an emergency kit with essential items for safety and survival. They should secure their houses, carry out repairs and do not leave sharp objects loose. “Secure outside objects that could blow away and cause damage, remove rotting trees or broken branches that could fall and cause injury or damage and listen to radio, watch TV or read newspapers for weather updates and warnings.”

The advisory comes after 124 people died and more than 300 were injured in thunderstorms and lightning that had hit five states last week.
