Stray dogs maul 5-yr-old to death in Sangrur village

Sangrur, May 18: A five-year-old girl was dragged to 300 metres by stray dogs before being mauled to death on the outskirts of Bhindra vilage in the district on Wednesday evening.Villagers said the girl, Aashu, was playing near her house on the outskirts of the village around 5.30 pm when four-five stray dogs attacked her.

They caught her from the neck and dragged her towards the fields. Some farmers, working in nearby fields, thought that the dogs had caught some other animal.“I was working in the fields when I heard the sound of barking dogs.

I thought they had caught some animal and fighting over it. It is common for stray dogs hunting birds and smaller animals,” said Ravinder Singh, a villager. Sukhchain Singh, who works in a private company, was returning to nearby Mehsampur village on a motorcycle when he saw the dogs mauling the girl.

He immediately shooed away the dogs by throwing stones at them. Sukhchain Singh then took Aashu to a medical store at Ghabdan and called her mother Harpreet Kaur. They then rushed her to Sangrur Civil Hospital.

The doctors referred her to Rajindera Hospital, Patiala, where she succumbed to her injuries.“There is shock and panic in the village. Most children remained indoors due to the fear of stray dogs,” said Rachpal Singh, deceased’s father.Sangrur DSP Sandeep Wadehra and SDM Avikesh Gupta along with other senior officers visited the spot and assured the villages of action to check the stray dog menace.
