Chandigarh, November 15: The Punjab police on Wednesday launched a search in Pathankot after four persons allegedly snatched at gunpoint from the driver a sports utility vehicle they had hired. The district, bordering Pakistan, has been put on high alert after the driver informed the police of the incident that took place on Tuesday night near Madhopur.

Senior Superintendent of Police Vivek Soni told The Hindu that the four persons had hired the vehicle at the Jammu taxi stand for a trip to Pathankot. “Near Madhopur, one of them asked the driver to stop the vehicle pretending to be unwell. As he stopped the vehicle, the occupants snatched the SUV at gunpoint,” said Mr. Soni.

“Security has been been beefed up in Pathankot and neighbouring areas to trace the vehicle and suspects,” he said. “A police team has also been sent to Sambha in Jammu, where the suspects had dinner on Tuesday night. We will be examining the CCTV footage to identify them,” he said. The suspects were speaking in Punjabi, the police said.

In 2016, terrorists, who attacked the Pathankot air base, snatched a Punjab police officer’s car to get to the target.
