Two arrested for smuggling 14-kg poppy husk with tomatoes on forged permission

CHANDIGARH/FATEHGARH SAHIB, APRIL 9:  On high alert since the Covid 19 outbreak, the Fatehgarh Sahib police on Thursday arrested two persons trying to smuggle 14 KG poppy husk hidden in truck laden with tomatoes by forging “Essential Services” certificate to purportedly transport raw food material for an industrial production. 

A police spokesperson identified the duo as Anil Kumar s/o Charanjeet Ratan and Harvinder Singh s/o Ram Singh who during the preliminary investigation have admitted sourcing the contraband from Rajasthan. 

According to the spokesperson, a tip off was received and truck bearing number PB 23 F/4141 was intercepted by team of Police Station Khedi Naudh Singh of Khamano sub-division. The accused had pasted an essential services certificate allegedly issued by issued by GM District Indutries Centre Jalandhar on their vehicle to avoid police checking. 

Poppy husk was found hidden under cartons of tomatoes. A case FIR under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. 

The certificate has been issued to one M/s Shree Shivshakti Bakers Pvt Limited of village Bacchowa Tehsil Phillaur Jalandhar, the spokesperson further revealed adding that further investigation was underway to ascertain its veracity to unveil the entire plot.  

Accused Anil Kumar is a resident of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar in Kharar, while Harvinder Singh belongs to Badesa in Khamano.
