UK-based NRI murdered, cops see property dispute

Moga, February 6: A 53-year-old UK citizen of the Indian origin was allegedly strangled to death in the district, police officials said here today.

The NRI’s body was found near a drain on the Mothanwali link road at Singhawala village on the outskirts of the city yesterday.

A local farmer, Jasvir Singh, resident of Mothanwali village, found the body lying near the drain and informed the police. Police officials reached the spot and started investigation.

The deceased was identified as Sukhdev Singh, originally hailing from Ghal Kalan village.

Paramjit Kaur, wife of Gurdev Singh, a resident of Ghal Kalan village, identified the body of Sukhdev Singh claiming that he was her brother-in-law. She said Sukhdev had been living in the UK for the past 25 years and had come here for a small stay about three months back. Her husband Gurdev Singh, who is the brother of Sukhdev Singh, had been living in UAE for the past few years.

Paramjit stated that she went to her parent’s house at Kokri Kalan village leaving behind her brother-in-law at home. When she came back on Tuesday, she found that the room of Sukhdev Singh was locked from outside. She inquired about him from neighbours and later on coming to know about a body lying in the hospital went there. She found that the body was of her brother-in-law. After the post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to family members.

Preliminary investigation conducted by the police revealed that the UK citizen was strangled to death with the help of a plastic rope, which has been recovered by the police from the spot.

Police officials believe that the reason for murder could be a family dispute over division of property.

Meanwhile, a case of murder has been registered against unknown persons at the the Moga City-II police station.
