Hoshiarpur, July 13: Local vigilantes thrashed two addicts, who were found consuming intoxicants, before handing them over to the police at Sataur village in the district on Thursday. An FIR was lodged against the duo identified as Sandeep Kumar and Lovepreet under Sections 27, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act. Both were produced in a court, which remanded them in judicial custody.

Earlier in the day, two motorcycle-borne youths were spotted in the village. Local youths, suspecting that they had come to supply narcotics, started questioning them. The addicts, who were under the influence of intoxicants, failed to answer the queries. This enraged the villagers, who beat up the duo.

Later, one of them said they had come to buy narcotics from a village youth whose father was a medical practitioner. On being informed, a police party from Hariana police station and an STF team reached the spot. Sandeep and Lovepreet were arrested. A white powder was seized from their possession.

Harjinder Singh, Sub-Inspector, said the police were searching for the suspected drug peddler mentioned by one of the arrested youths.
