Chandigarh, April 9: Rajya Sabha MP Shwait Malik, while taking over as president of the state BJP unit at a ceremony here on Sunday, gave a call for “Congress quit Punjab movement”.
Addressing leaders and workers, Malik said: “We have given the Congress government enough time to deliver. But it has failed to fulfil even a single promise from its long list of assurances given to the voters during the Assembly polls last year.”
“Unemployed are not getting any jobs, newlyweds are not getting ‘shagun’ and elders are without pension. Farmers are being forced to commit suicide in the wake of a farce loan waiver scheme. To top it all, people will now have to pay higher taxes and higher electricity bills. There is a lot of resentment among people which will become evident in the next year’s Lok Sabha elections,” Malik said.
The occasion saw as many as seven former state BJP presidents sharing the stage. They were Madan Mohan Mittal, Manoranjan Kalia, Avinash Rai Khanna, Rajinder Bhandari, Ashwani Sharma, Kamal Sharma and Vijay Sampla. Also present on the occasion were incharge of the state unit Prabhat Jha, national general secretary Tarun Chugh and singer Hans Raj Hans.
“The SAD-BJP’s work on 24-hour power supply, welfare schemes and infrastructure (mainly roads) is unparalleled in the state. The Congress has nothing more to show except maligning our government. It has not given a single benefit to people. Our party workers need to get together to bring about a qualitative change in the state.”
Malik said: “Our party is not a family enterprise. Starting from a virtual zero today we have approximately 1,600 MLAs and 350 MPs, which speaks volumes of the sincerity of the party that has worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people. We are sure to keep up the good show in the Lok Sabha elections.”
Meanwhile, critics point out even as most BJP leaders reiterated their commitment on alliance with the SAD, “not even a single Sikh was on the stage”.
