The Alberta Newcomer Recognition Awards will celebrate outstanding accomplishments of immigrants including youth, women, seniors, entrepreneurs, workers and community builders.
Nominations were accepted for individuals born outside of Canada who are now Canadian citizens or permanent residents who reside and contribute to a community in Alberta. Individuals do not have to be recent arrivals, but can have lived in Canada for many years.
The 2022 award nomination period was open June 10 to August 7, 2022.
Nomination categories
- Small Community Enhancement – Contributions to a rural community
- Newcomer Champion – Supporting newcomers to succeed

Inclusive Workplaces – Creating a diverse and inclusive workplace
- Career & Academics Contribution – Professional or academic excellence
- Entrepreneurial Spirit – Small or medium business owner innovation

Student Inspiration – A young leader in Grade 12 or younger

Young Leader – People ages 18 to 30 who have made a difference
- Women’s Newcomer Impact – A female leader in her community
- Senior Spirit – An Albertan (65 years or older) who enriches their community
Nomination criteria
- Need: how the nominee played a role in contributing their expertise and resources to fulfill a need including economic growth, community need and advancement in a profession or field of study.
- Impact: how the nominee’s actions and activities have made a significant impact.
- Contribution: how the nominee contributed a significant amount of time and energy to their category while demonstrating community service, volunteerism or engagement.
- Leadership: how the nominee demonstrated exemplary initiative, served as a role model for others and inspired others to engage.

Originality: how the nominee demonstrated creativity or innovative solutions when problem-solving where a unique solution was required.
After you nominate
Nominations are reviewed by the Alberta Newcomer Awards review committee. Recipients of Alberta Newcomer Recognition Awards are formally recognized at a ceremony to highlight and celebrate their achievements.
Awards recipients may also be asked to participate in interviews, photographs and videos to share experiences and lessons learned from their work. To promote their outstanding achievements, brief biographies and photos of award recipients may be shared with the public and the media.
Awards decisions are at the discretion of the Associate Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism.
