Chandigarh, May 31: The Punjab Police on Thursday announced the successful implementation of a criminal identification software system — Punjab Artificial Intelligence System (PAIS) — in which profiles of as many as 90,000 criminals have been uploaded on a mobile app for the force.

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on Thursday honoured the Punjab Police with a trophy for best practices in smart policing, 2018. The award was presented to Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, IGP, Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU), and Gurjot Singh, DSP, OCCU. A number of other states, including Uttarakhand and Rajasthan, have adopted this system.

A police press release said under this system the data of all arrested criminals had been captured (about 500 daily) from all prisons of the state and fed into the server. Each criminal has been given a unique ID and all relevant information related to the criminal involving 10 basic parameters had been fed into the system.

The purpose of this application is to create a “mini-dossier” of all criminals of Punjab and make it available to field officers in their mobile phones. The database can be searched by photographs or other identifiable parameters within a few seconds. The police release said many criminals had been caught using this system already.
