First woman DSP of Chandigarh cadre takes charge

Chandigarh, February 1: Two Chandigarh cadre inspectors promoted as deputy superintendents of police (DSP). Harjeet Kaur and Daleep Rattan have taken take charge of their new posts, even though they have not been assigned duties yet.

The departmental promotion committee (DPC) on January 23 cleared names of two Chandigarh police inspectors — Daleep Rattan in crime branch and in-charge of economic offences wing (EOW) Harjit Kaur — on the basis of seniority.

Inspector Daleep Rattan had joined Chandigarh police as assistant sub inspector (ASI) in January 1987.

With Harjeet Kaur joining as DSP, she became the first female inspector of Chandigarh cadre to be promoted as DSP. Even though, the city already has two female DSPs but both of them are from Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli (DANIPS) cadre.

Harjit Kaur as sub inspector in the Chandigarh police was also the first woman cop of the region to be selected for the UN mission in Kosovo, 2004.

Inspector Harjit Kaur had joined as ASI in 1989 and rose to the rank of DSP. Her husband Tejinder Singh is DSP with the Punjab police and her son Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the first Indian to play in Europe for Norwegian club Stabaek FC.
