Punjab resident takes away car impounded at naka

Chandigarh, February 1: A Punjab resident, whose car was impounded at a drunken driving naka laid on road dividing Sectors 35/36, managed to steal it using a duplicate key on Wednesday night.

Sources said the Chandigarh traffic police had laid a drunken driving naka when the accused riding a Honda City car bearing Chandigarh number was signalled to stop.The traffic cops found the accused, identified as Baljot Singh a resident of Fatehgarh Sahib, drunk, following which his car was impounded.

The sources said a traffic constable was later taking the vehicle to the Traffic Lines, Sector 29. However, the car broke down near Attawa Chowk.

The traffic cop locked the car and parked it on the roadside and walked up to the naka to call the recovery van for towing the vehicle. In the meanwhile, the accused, Baljot, along with his friends came and drove away with the car by using a duplicate key.The police investigated and found that Baljot had purchased the car around two years ago from a Sector 21 resident.

A case of theft has been registered against the accused on the complaint of the traffic cop at the Sector 36 police station.
