Govt: Most vacancies in border schools filled

Chandigarh, August 1: To improve the state of school education in border districts, the Education Department has filled most of the vacant posts of teaching staff in Ferozepur, Fazilka, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Tarn Taran and Amritsar.

The staff have been deputed from among the recently promoted and freshly recruited teachers.

Sources said the step had been taken following the below average results of Classes X and XII of government schools in border districts.

As many as 448 teachers have been posted against 546 vacancies for mathematics alone; 433 for science against 587 vacancies and 174 for Punjabi against 204 vacancies in these districts.

Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and Pathankot had failed to record even 50 percentage result against the state overall pass percentage of 65.97 for Class XII.

However, there more than 70 per cent posts of English teacher are still vacant. While no new recruitment was done, 144 newly promoted teachers were deputed in border districts.

Another subject that featured lower on the priority list of filling vacancies is social studies. Despite the promotion of 64 and recruitment of 166 teachers, there is still about 70 per cent vacancy.

As many as 540 recently promoted and 889 newly recruited teachers (of 3,582) have been given posting in border districts, which still have approximately 45 per cent vacancies. As per official data, 1,429 of 2,586 posts now filled.

Krishan Kumar, Secretary, School Education, said: “We will recruit as many teachers as possible to improve the quality of school education, particularly in border areas.”
