Chandigarh, September 25: The Punjab Police team investigating the recovery of cache of arms, ammunition and fake currency has reported the use of GPS-fitted drones, capable of lifting up to 10 kg, from Pakistan seven to eight times.
Reported for the first time from Punjab, many drones were used to drop weapons and communication devices, among others, from across the border, an official said, adding that a half-burnt drone purportedly used in the operation had been recovered from Tarn Taran.
On Sunday, the Punjab Police had claimed to have busted a terror module of Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), which had links to a group based out of Pakistan and Germany. With this the police had foiled plans of the terror group to strike in Punjab and adjoining states.
Four hardcore criminals, identified as Balwant Singh, alias Nihang, Akashdeep Singh alias Akash Randhawa, Harbhajan Singh and Balbir Singh, had been arrested from the outskirts of Chohla Sahib village in Tarn Taran the same day.
The accused had reportedly confessed to the use of GPS-fitted “big” drones to drop arms and ammunition from across the border in Tarn Taran district, an official of Punjab Police said.
Five AK-47 rifles, 16 magazines and 472 rounds of ammunition, four Chinese-made .30 bore pistols, along with eight magazines and 72 rounds of ammunition; nine hand grenades, five satellite phones, two mobile phones, two wireless sets and fake currency valued at Rs 10 lakh had been seized.
Though investigations are underway, it is believed that the weapons were meant to be used to spread terror in Jammu and Kashmir.
