Fazilka, April 2: A heavy police force has been deployed in Jalalabad town of the district in the wake of prevailing tension between two communities over the bandh call for Monday.
Mukhtiar Singh, SP, said about 450 police personnel had been deployed in the town having a population of about 50,000 to prevent any untoward incident.
On Sunday, some miscreants threw carcasses of animals and garbage in front of houses of traders who have announced not to shut their shops on Monday. Following this, the traders and residents belonging to the general category held a protest dharna in the town, resulting in tension.
They alleged that despite assurance, the police had failed to take action against the miscreants who threw garbage and animal carcass in front of their houses. Though the protesters later relented, uneasy calm prevailed in the town.
Deputy Commissioner Isha Kalia said the situation was under control and enough arrangements had been made so that no one could disturb peace.
The district administration has reportedly advised the traders of Fazilka, Jalalabad and Abohar to follow the bandh call and keep their shops shut. “Though most of the shopkeepers are of the view of opening their establishments, we shall have to cooperate, given the sensitivity of the situation,” said Ashok Gulbadhar, president, Beopar Mandal, Fazilka.
