Chandigarh, June 2: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma called up Captain Amarinder Singh late on Friday night to assure him of the safety of the Sikh community and their religious institutions in the state following communal clashes.
Sangma called up the Punjab Chief Minister around 10.30 p.m. to apprise him of the situation in the state in the wake of communal violence reportedly triggered by a minor incident and to allay any apprehensions of the Sikh community being under attack.
Amid rumours to the contrary, Sangma also assured Captain Amarinder that there was no damage to any Gurudwara or other institutions belonging to the Sikh minority in Meghalaya.
The Punjab Chief Minister expressed concern over the developments and hoped the situation would not escalate further. The Meghalayan Chief Minister said he was personally monitoring the situation to ensure that there is no further trouble or incident that could trigger fresh tensions.
Captain Amarinder said the attacks on Sikhs in various parts of the country in recent past was a matter of serious worry. Such incidents had the potential of causing communal divisions that did not augur well for the nation, he added.
Sangma assured Captain Amarinder that the situation was now under control, with the Army of standby to avert any fresh outbreak of trouble. He further assured the Punjab Chief Minister that his government was committed to ensuring the safety and security of all communities in the state and would take all possible steps to avert any further trouble.
Captain Amarinder requested his Meghalayan counterpart to keep him informed of the situation and extended any help needed to defuse the tension.
