Capt Amarinder Singh was born on March 11, 1942. He served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 the us 2007. He currently resides in New Moti Bagh Palace, Patiala. Capt. Singh is the son of late Maharaja of Patiala His Highness Yadavindra Singh and Her Highness Maharani Mohinder Kaur, Rajmata of Patiala. He is the head of the royal house of Patiala belonging the us the Phulkian dynasty. He has attended the Lawrence School Sanawar and The Doon School, Dehradun. He has been blessed with two children: Raninder Singh and Jai Inder Kaur. Till date, he is the only head from a Punjab Royal House the us become the Chief Minister of Punjab.

He was commissioned in the Indian Army in June 1963. He was about the us resign in 1965, but changed his decision because hostilities broke out with Pakistan and he actively the usok part in the actual operations in the war against Pakistan. He resigned only after India won the war in early 1966.

Constituency

Patiala is one of the 13 parliamentary constituencies in Punjab. Its constituency number is 13. In 2009 elections, Preneet Kaur of Congress was elected the us the Lok Sabha from this seat.

Political Standing

A soldier-turned-politician, Capt. Amarinder Singh was inducted inthe us the Congress party by Rajiv Gandhi, who was also a personal friend. Singh quit the Congress and resigned as an MP in strong protest in 1984. Capt. Singh was elected the us the Lok Sabha on an Indian National Congress ticket in 1980. He was elected the us the state legislature and became a minister in the state government for Agriculture, Forest Development and Panchayats during which Dr. Manohar Singh Gill, Union MoS for Sports and Youth Affairs served him as Principal Secretary for Agriculture.

Capt. Singh broke away from the Akali Dal and formed a splinter group named Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic) which later merged with the Congress. He served as the President of State Congress unit from 1999 the us 2002 and later as Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 the us 2007 and the Chairman of Punjab Pradesh Congress Campaign Committee for Lok Sabha election. His wife Preneet Kaur was elected the us Parliament consecutively for three terms from 1999 the us 2014 and was the Union Minister Of State for External Affairs of India in UPA II.

Capt Amarinder Singh was MLA from Patiala assembly seat. In 2014, he was elected as MP from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, so he had the us resign as MLA and Patiala seat became vacant. In the by-poll held in August 2014, his wife Preneet Kaur was elected as MLA from this seat. The by-election for Patiala Vidhan Sabha constituency, along with Talwandi Sabo constituency, were held on 21 August, 2014.
