Chandigarh, November 6: State AAP MLAs are scheduled to meet tomorrow to discuss the situation arising out of alleged drug links of Leader of the Opposition Sukhpal Khaira.
Some MLAs close to Khaira may seek disciplinary action against others who had made public statements seeking his resignation.
Party sources said the MLAs usually meet every Tuesday but in the backdrop of the controversy on Khaira’s alleged drug links the meeting was likely to discuss the public statements made by some MLAs and other leaders against the stand taken by Khaira on his resignation from the post of the Leader of Opposition.
Khaira who has been summoned by a Fazilka court on an allegation of exchanging phone calls with some convicted smugglers, has refused to resign saying he was a victim of political vendetta.
The source said the group of legislators supporting the Bholath MLA had already finalised plans to show evidence in form of video-clippings and newspaper reports against the MLAs who made public remarks against Khaira on political propriety.
The sources said the matter may be referred to the disciplinary committee subject to what transpired at the meeting. A leader said the party had internal democracy and all were free to air their opinion but the majority of MLAs agreed that public statements should have been avoided.
Sources close to Khaira revealed that he was upset over the statements against him. They said he had kept a record of the statements. He was likely to propose unity on the issue as the party leadership had to be together to fight this alleged case of political vendetta and more in future.
The Fazilka-based court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Sandeep Singh Jossan on Monday sought the state government’s response to an application moved on behalf of Leader of the Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira against his summoning. The court had on November 1 issued non-bailable warrants against five persons, including Khaira, in a case under the NDPS Act. All were summoned to be present in the court on November 30 and stand trial under Sections 29, 30, 27-A and 23 of the NDPS Act.
