Patiala, November 7: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will elect its new president on November 29, when the committee’s General House has been convened. This was announced in a meeting of the Sikh body held here on Monday.

Of its 190 members, 170 are elected, 15 nominated and the remaining are the Sikh high priests. The members of the present committee were elected in 2011. Incumbent chief Kirpal Singh Badungar had replaced Avtar Singh Makkar last year.

The SGPC, meanwhile, opposed the state government’s recent proposal to enact the Punjab Control of Organised Crime Act (PCOCA).
Badungar claimed that all such laws enacted in the country in the recent past had only brought trouble for the minorities. “There are already enough provisions under the law to deal with tough criminals. The government should ensure its proper implementation instead of bringing a new law,” he said.
The SGPC also decided to depict pictures and paintings related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots at Central Sikh Museum at the Golden Temple Complex.
The Sikh body decided to form a committee to collect and compile facts behind the riots to be published in a book.
