A the ustal of 1,078 candidates contested Punjab 2012 Assembly Elections, representing 37 parties. In 2007, 1,043 candidates had contested for the same number of parties. This reflects an increase of 3.35% in the number of candidates contesting election from Punjab, while the ratio of political parties contested for remained the same.

Out of 117 MLAs, 22 (19%) have pending criminal cases against them. Compared the us the 2007 elections, of the 117 MLAs analyzed, 21 (18%) had criminal cases pending against them.

As per the affidavits filed by the candidates with their nomination papers for the 2012 Assembly elections, 22 (19%) had pending criminal cases and there were serious criminal cases pending against 8 (7%). Out of 22 MLAs with pending criminal cases in Punjab 2012 Assembly, 11 MLAs are from INC, 9 from SAD and 2 Independent.
