Shopian martyr cremated with honours in Mukerian

Hoshiarpur, April 4: Sariana village resident gunner Arvinder Kumar, who was killed during an encounter with militants in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, was cremated with military honours at his native village on Tuesday. His younger brother Prem Singh, who’s also an Army man posted in Sikkim, lit the pyre.

Arvinder, elder son of farmer Darshan Singh, was recruited in the 15 Medium regiment of Indian Army on June 26, 2012. He was now posted as gunner in the 34-RR (Rashtriya Rifles) unit.

He is survived by his parents, four elder sisters and a brother. When the body of the martyr reached the village, the youth took out a motorcycle rally holding the Tricolour. The youth also raised slogans against Pakistan.

Arvinder had come home in February on annual leave and had returned to his platoon on March 2. His kin were looking for a girl to marry him.During the funeral, Mukerian MLA Rajneesh Kumara Babbi, Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujwal and SSP J Elanchzhian presented the wreath.

Babby said Arvinder had sacrificed his life for the country, for which the country would always be indebted to him. He said the state government was with the martyr’s family.
