The constable, Davinder Singh, 30, had stopped him for questioning and was taking him to the police post when the incident took place.

According to police sources, the accused and his accomplice were outside DMCH with a motorcycle that did not have a number plate. After receiving information, the constable reached the spot and started questioning them when one of the accused managed to escape.

Following this, the constable nabbed suspect and started taking him to the DMCH police post. But the suspected vehicle-lifter took out a country made pistol and opened fire at him.

“The bullet pierced through his right leg, leaving him injured.” said police commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill, who reached the spot after being informed.

“The suspect told the constable that the bike belongs to him. When the constable asked him to produce the documents, he tried to escape. The constable raised alarm and nabbed him with the help of locals. When the constable was taking him to police post DMCH for questioning, the accused opened fire at him,” the commissioner added.

“The constable fell on the road following which the suspect fled the spot. The locals rushed the constable to DMCH, where his condition is stated to be stable,” he added.

According to the police chief, the constable had clicked pictures of the suspect with his smart phone before taking him to the police post, which helped the police in identifying him. Moreover, the suspected was captured in the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the area.

The suspect has been identified as Rohit Kubba of Rishi Nagar Extension. The police have rounded up his accomplice for questioning and also confiscated the motorcycle.

A case of attempt to murder and attacking a police official on duty has been registered against Rohit Kubba at the Division Number 8 police station.
