Amritsar, July 17: PWD Minister Vijay Inder Singla on Monday said thirty-two railway overbridges (RoBs) would be constructed by the state government. He was here to inaugurate the extension of the Bhandari Bridge flyover, known as the lifeline of the holy city as it connects the old walled city with the civil lines area. The four-lane Bhandari Bridge loop, which has been constructed to facilitate the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), measures 650 m and costs Rs 41 crore.

Singla said RoBs worth Rs 1,350 crore and the repair and reconstruction of rural link roads under various schemes are in the pipeline for Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Dinanagar and Pathankot, followed by one each at Sujanpur and Nalunga in Pathankot and at Tibri road in Gurdaspur. “The projects are at various stages of planning and execution. Besides easing the vehicular traffic, the RoBs on all manned and unmanned level crossings would eliminate the risk of accidents due to human error,” he said.

He was addressing a press conference in the presence of Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, Education and Environment Minister OP Soni and MP Gurjit Singh Aujla. He said it would be the first time that Punjab would get the highest share from the Pradhan Mantri Sarak Yojna. By contributing 40 per cent of the state’s share in the total expenditure of Rs 2,000 crore, all link roads would be reconstructed, he said. On the insistence of MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, approval was also given for the construction of Amritsar-Ajnala road, Ajnala-Chaugavan road, a bridge leading to Ramdas and the Ramtirath bypass. “An amount of Rs 20 crore will be released soon for the same, said Singla. To tighten the noose around toll plaza companies, a helpline is going to be set up to address grievances.
