Ludhiana, July 12: A day after an “underage” Mercedes driver tried to run over a traffic cop at the Hero Bakery chowk here, the Ludhiana police said they had identified the vehicle owner. However, the cops claimed that they were yet to confirm the identity of the owner’s son, who was reportedly driving the car.

The police registered a case under Sections 279, 353, 186 and 332 of the IPC and Section 40 of the Motor Vehicle Act against an “unknown person” on Thursday after recording the statement of the injured cop, Surinder Singh.

Jatinder Kumar, SHO, said Gaurav Arora, a businessman based in Rishi Nagar, was found to be the car owner on the basis of information received from the Transport Department.

“We have directed the car owner to visit the police station. As he claims that his son is not underage, he has been told to produce the age proof. We will soon identify the driver and initiate legal action,” the SHO said.

Asked why the case was registered against an “unknown” driver, the SHO said the driver’s identification was pending, adding that the name could be added to the FIR once the process was completed.

Surinder, who is undergoing treatment at the SAS Grewal hospital, demanded strict action against the culprit so that no one dared to endanger the lives of cops.
