Jaito (Faridkot), January 9: To register their protest against the soaring crime graph, residents and traders in Jaito today observed a complete bandh and blocked traffic on the Bathinda-Amritsar road.
The police claimed to have rounded up some of the accused who had looted the family of a rice miller in the town on Saturday. They also recovered some part of the looted booty, including jewellery, cash and two fire weapons.
Succumbing to the public protest, senior police officers today rushed to Jaito and assured the residents of solving the robbery cases in the next 24 hours.
Faridkot SSP Dr Nanak Singh persuaded the residents to end the blockade as it was causing inconvenience to the public.
Political leaders across all parties participated in the dharna today. The protesters alleged that in the wake of the increasing number of robbery incidents in the town, some panic-stricken traders have started closing their businesses and shifting to other places.
The Jaito police today booked 15 persons for allegedly harbouring and sheltering criminals of the area. In an FIR registered under Sections 212 and 216 of the IPC, the police booked 15 relatives of Aman Singh, alias Amna, who is involved in several crimes in the area. Those booked include the father, brother and an uncle of Amna at Jaito, his sister and many other relatives.
The police would take strict action against any person who would provide shelter to any criminal, said the Faridkot SSP.
